About This Recipe
These roasted red wine figs are sweet, tender, with just a hint of fragrant rosemary. Fresh figs have such a short season, and when you find them, this simple recipe is one of the best ways to enjoy them. The red wine and honey reduce into a syrupy sauce that’s just as good drizzled over the figs as it is on yogurt, ice cream, or creamy baked brie.
Serve them warm on a cheeseboard with goat cheese or Camembert, or keep it simple and spoon over Greek yogurt for a quick dessert. Add a sprinkle of chopped pistachios for crunch and you can’t go wrong!
📋 Ingredients
- Fresh figs – Choose ripe figs that are plump, heavy, and slightly soft for the sweetest flavor. Any color works.
- Red wine – A medium-bodied wine works best. For a non-alcoholic option, try balsamic vinegar with extra citrus juice.
- Brown sugar and Honey – Enhance the figs’ natural sweetness.
- Vanilla extract or paste – Brings warmth and aroma.
- Orange zest – Orange and fig are a classic pairing. Lemon zest works too.
- Fresh rosemary – Earthy and aromatic; substitute thyme or tarragon for a different twist.
See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
🍋 Substitutions and Variations
- Herbs: Swap rosemary for thyme or tarragon.
- Alcohol-free option: Use balsamic vinegar plus extra citrus juice instead of red wine.
- Wine options: Try white wine for a lighter flavor profile.
- Extra flavor: Add a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom for warm spice.
📍 Recipe Tips
- Choosing figs: Look for fruit that feels heavy for its size, with smooth skin and just a little give when gently squeezed. Avoid figs that are overly mushy or split.
- Don’t over bake: Figs soften quickly. You want them jammy but still holding their shape.
- Serve warm or at room temperature: The flavors intensify as they cool slightly.
Serving Suggestions
- With baked brie or Camembert.
- Over Greek yogurt, ricotta, or labneh.
- As a topping for ice cream, with chopped pistachios or walnuts.
- On a cheeseboard alongside crusty bread.
- As a sweet-salty fig pizza topping with prosciutto.

Delicious! We swapped bourbon for the red wine and bourbon vanilla extract for the vanilla extract. Poured it over warm brie cheese. We've made this appetizer repeatedly. Enjoy!!

Beth, the swap you did is Wonderful. I am a bourbon girl myself and the brie spin is genius. Have a great week, Samantha.
