🍕 About This Recipe

There is a short window at the end of summer, when fresh figs are perfectly in season. I love keeping them simple and make roasted figs with honey as an easy dessert or making baked figs with blue cheese for a quick appetizer.

If you love the combination of sweet and savory and lucky enough to score a handful of fresh figs, then you will love this fig and prosciutto pizza! The pizza is simply layered with a schmear of tangy creme fraiche and mozzarella along with slices of salty prosciutto and slices of fresh figs.

And if you have any leftover pizza dough, you must try this recipe for a Pizza Sandwich!

📋 Ingredients

Ingredients for fig and prosciutto pizza, including creme fraiche, mozzarella, basil and aged balsamic,
  • Pizza Dough: Bring the pizza dough to room temperature about an hour before rolling the dough, which will make it easier to stretch out.
  • Creme Fraiche: This is a tangy French sour cream product that is creamy and tart. If creme fraiche isn't available, you could substitute sour cream or creamy ricotta cheese.
  • Mozzarella: Any mozzarella will work for, but i do suggest shredding or roughly tearing a mozzarella instead of using the pre-shredded options.
  • Prosciutto: Prosciutto is an Italian cured pork product that is thinly sliced with salty and slightly funky notes.
  • Fresh Figs: Figs are a seasonal luxury and not often found all throughout the year. When looking for figs, look for plump and ripe figs that feel heavy for their size.
  • Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar: Drizzle a bit of olive right before cooking the pizza and save the aged balsamic as a finishing touch. Use a sweet aged balsamic that is thicker and sweet or use balsamic glaze.
  • Fresh Basil: If figs are in season, you most likely have fresh basil as well! If basil isn't available, garnish the pizza with a handful of peppery arugula.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

🍋 Substitutions and Variations

  • Instead of fresh figs, substitute with chopped dried figs, which will give the prosciutto pizza a bit more sweetness.
  • If you like smoky, try speck instead of prosciutto. Speck is the same cut and style, but instead of cured, the meat is smoked.
  • Creme fraiche may be difficult to find, you can substitute with sour cream or a creamy ricotta cheese.
  • Garnish the fig prosciutto pizza with a handful of fresh arugula that drizzled with olive oil.
  • Instead of mozzarella, add creamy goat cheese or add both goat cheese and mozzarella.

⏲️ Instructions

Spread a thin layer of creme fraiche onto the pizza dough and layer mozzarella cheese.

Step 1: Spread a thin layer of creme fraiche onto the stretched out pizza dough and top with roughly torn mozzarella cheese.

Once the cheese is on, layer slices of prosciutto and sliced fresh figs onto the pizza.

Step 2: Add a few slices of prosciutto and scatter sliced figs on top and drizzle the pizza with olive oil before cooking.

Cook the prosciutto pizza in a hot oven until the crust is golden brown.

Step 3: Cook the fig prosciutto pizza in a hot oven until the crust is golden brown and cheese has melted.

Once the prosciutto and fig pizza is golden brown and cooked through, garnish with drizzle of balsamic and fresh basil leaves,

Step 4: Once the pizza is finished cooking, remove from the oven and garnish with a drizzle of aged balsamic and scatter fresh basil leaves.

📍 Recipe Tips

  • Bring the pizza dough to room temperature before rolling out, which will make the dough easier to stretch out.
  • Pre-heat the oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 30 minutes before cooking the pizza.
  • A pizza stone is essential for a crispy crust, but a good alternative is using an upside down baking sheet.

Recipe FAQs

Does prosciutto go on before or after pizza is cooked?

Prosciutto can go on before cooking the pizza or afterwards. If adding the prosciutto beforehand, it will slightly crisp up when cooked.

What are the best figs to put on pizza?

Fresh mission figs are fantastic on pizza! They are sweet and caramelize nicely when cooked in a hot oven.

Can you eat prosciutto raw?

Yes, prosciutto is salt cured and perfectly find to eat right out of the package!

🥗 What to Serve With

Serve the fig pizza with prosciutto alongside a peppery arugula and pear salad or heirloom tomato caprese salad.
