About This Recipe

The next time you buy pizza dough, save some and make pizza sandwiches instead of traditional pizza.

Not to be confused with a cheese calzone, I saw pizza sandwiches trending on TikTok and instantly fell in love! Instead of rolling out the pizza dough and layering the toppings, you fold the dough onto itself, forming the 'sandwich' and cook until golden (I swear by a pizza stone) and stuff with all your favorite fillings.

📋 Ingredients

Ingredients for pizza dough sandwich, including fillings with ricotta cheese and meats, sundried tomatoes and pesto.

Have fun with the fillings and use your anything that you would normally top a pizza with. I made 2 different pizza sandwiches

Pesto and Prosciutto

  • Ricotta Cheese: Look for a thick creamy ricotta that is not too watery.
  • Prosciutto or Speck (smoked prosciutto)
  • Basil Pesto
  • Sundried Tomatoes
  • Fresh Basil or Arugula
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • Olive Oil
  • Aged Balsamic Vinegar or Balsamic Glaze

Mortadella and Pistachios

  • Ricotta Cheese
  • Mortadella
  • Chopped PIstachios
  • Fresh Basil
  • Lemon Zest
  • Calabrian Chilis (optional, for spice)

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

⏲️ Instructions

Stretch out both halves of the pizza dough into an oblong shape.

Step 1. Cut a pound of pizza dough in half and roll each ball of dough into an oblong shape.

Brush the pizza dough with olive oil. This will prevent the dough from sticking when it's folded over.

Step 2. Brush a thin layer of olive oil onto the dough and fold the dough over itself. Bake until golden brown and puffed up, for about 8-10 minutes.

Cook the folded pizza dough until golden brown.

Step 3. Once done, let the doughs cool slightly, then gently open up.

Cut the filled pizza sandwich in half.

Step 4. Stuff the pizza sandwich with your favorite fillings and enjoy!

📍 Recipe Tips

  • Preheat the Pizza Stone: If using a pizza stone, pre-heat it in the oven at 550 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 1 hour to get hot.
  • Bring the Dough to Room Temp: Leave the pizza dough at room temperature for at least an hour before rolling it out.
  • Let the Dough Rest: If the pizza dough springs back as you're rolling it out, let it rest for a few minutes then continue.
  • Char the Outside: Turn on the broiler for the last 1-2 minutes for a charred exterior.

Recipe FAQs

Can pizza sandwiches be made ahead of time?

Yes, cook the dough ahead of time and let cool completely and refrigerate. When ready, place the pizza sandwich in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven and cook until warmed through, then add fillings.

Serving Suggestions

There's nothing I enjoy more than a crisp salad alongside a hearty and cheesy pizza. Serve the pizza sandwiches with this arugula and parmesan salad or a fresh caprese salad with burrata cheese.
