French Dinner Party Menu

There’s something so timeless about a French dinner party. Good wine flowing, comforting dishes that fill the kitchen with incredible smells, and everyone lingering around the table long after dinner’s done. This menu keeps it classic but approachable, with bold flavors and mostly make-ahead recipes so you can enjoy the evening, too!

🧀 Appetizers

Option 1: Boursin-Stuffed Mushrooms
These bite-sized mushrooms are creamy, garlicky, and always a hit! Plus, they can be prepped ahead and baked right before serving.

Option 2: Simple Cheese Board
A small selection of French cheeses like brie, comté, and chèvre, served with grapes, sliced baguette, and a drizzle of honey.

💡 Tip: Let the cheese sit out for at least an hour before serving. Cheese should come to room temperature so it can “breathe” and reveal its full flavor.

🥣 Soup (Optional Starter)

Creamy Potato Leek Soup Classic and comforting and only made with a few ingredients. Serve the soup in small bowls or mugs before the main course.

🍲 Main Course Options

Beef Bourguignon A rich, wine-braised beef stew that’s even better the next day, so feel free to make it ahead. Serve straight from a Dutch oven at the center of your table for an effortless, family-style presentation.

Lobster Thermidor
If you're looking for a seafood option, this is luxurious yet surprisingly manageable. You can make the creamy sauce ahead, then gently reheat with the lobster right before serving.

Inspired by Julia Child's Lobster thermidor recipe, this version has mushrooms, Cognac and Gruyere cheese.

🍽 Side Dishes

  • Simple Green Salad with Dijon Vinaigrette- A crisp contrast to all the rich dishes.
  • Crusty Baguette or French Bread- For mopping up every last drop of sauce.

🍐 Dessert

White Wine Poached Pears Elegant, light, and make-ahead friendly (plus they pair beautifully with dessert wine).

Or keep it simple: a few squares of dark chocolate paired with espresso or a small glass of dessert wine.

  • You can’t go wrong with a good French red like a Burgundy or Pinot Noir, both pair beautifully with Beef Bourguignon.

  • Lobster Thermidor: Make the sauce in advance; assemble with lobster and reheat gently before serving.
  • Potato Leek Soup: Can be made 1–2 days ahead and reheated.
  • Poached Pears: Poached pears are even better the next day. Refrigerate them right in the syrup and serve chilled or at room temperature.
  • Cheeseboard: Assemble day of and let the cheese sit out for 1 hour.
