Happy 1yr BLOGIVERSARY to The LFK + Giveaway + Chimichuri Sauce

Giveaway Closed

Happy 1 year Blogiversary to The Little Ferraro Kitchen, to Hula, to Joey, to my Mom..to everyone that made LFK  delicious over the last 365 days. Almost hard to believe it was 365 days ago since I wrote this for the first time. Today is a celebration of food and happiness. Of finding myself and bringing everyone together. 365 days ago I was in a different place, searching for my next adventure and next open door. I have been through a  candy disaster and conquered a souffle. I have connected with some amazing and talented bloggers from all over the world and have had my humble food showcased all across the internet.

I honestly didn’t think I would last more than a few weeks as being a tech-savvy “blogger”. Telling people about my life, the food I created and wondering who in the world is reading this? Then all of a sudden various people would make my dish! Really? They made something I made! And who knew…it was good!  Do you know how that feels? Amazing! I couldn’t stop.

This has been an exciting year. And I can’t wait to see what’s in store next.

Of course, I couldn’t celebrate such a milestone without hosting a giveaway and nevertheless, doing what I love most,…cooking. So let me introduce to you what I have in store for today.

Wellness 100 is a newly published book (released July 20, 2012)  featuring a welcoming and easy to understand combination of science, nutrition and recipes. This book is written by a Doctor and Chef team, where they both bring something so important to the food table, good nutrition.

Being a health education major, this book is definitely up my alley. I have also been a victim of countless fad diets and don’t even get me started on how many times I have joined Weight Watchers. What I really enjoy about this book is that the team does not focus on “fad diets” or counting points or calories, these authors are drilling into reality. The first half of the book  is written by Dr French where she talks about healthy eating, healthy carbohydrates and healthy fats. In addition, what I really loved was how much Dr. French did not sell the readers on “fat-free” anything. She is passionate of the fact that real food relies on unprocessed and chemically altered foods. And that is what this blog is all about. Using real, natural ingredients all the time.

The second half of the book is where the fun comes in. Chef Morris includes 100 wholesome and healthy recipes that all looked amazing. They all seemed easy enough to throw together for the home-cook and all salivating enough to feed the pickiest crowds. I already have a few on my list to make, such as Greek burgers and Shrimp with Veracruz sauce. How exotic does that sound? And even though we’re not focusing on “points” or calories, at the bottom of each recipe there is a “Nutritional Analysis” telling you how many carbs, protein and calories are in each recipe.I still think it’s nice to know, even though I’m not counting anymore.

So since it’s my party…I can cook if I want to! 😉 As I was scanning the recipes…this is the one what caught my eye. Maybe it was the hot summer day or the smell of the neighbors grill…but I had to make this. Flank steak with Chimichuri Sauce is what’s on the Birthday menu.

Char-grilled steak over an open flame coupled with a fresh sauce of blended herbs and citrus. I have never had this combination before and it was perfect The chimichuri sauce was simple and powerful. Fresh herbs of parsley and cilantro with a squeeze of lemon juice and fresh garlic. I could pour this sauce over anything-and I did. The steak was seasoned simply with salt, pepper and smokey paprika. It charred nice and the textures between the cool sauce and hot steak was unbelievable. We ate this with some black beans and cumin, rice and fresh guacamole. I predict this to be on the weekly schedule.

Flank Steak with Chimichuri Sauce

Recipe inspired from Wellness 100.

    Chimichuri Sauce
  • 4 Tb red-wine vinegar
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1-2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
  • Large bunch of fresh parsley
  • Bunch of fresh cilantro
  • 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2-2lb flank steak
  • Paprika
  • Salt and pepper

  1. In a food processor or blender, combine all the chimichuri sauce ingredients. Begin by pulsing the herbs and add in as such olive as desired consistency.
  2. To cook the steak, prepare a grill to medium-high heat.
  3. Season the steak liberally with salt, pepper and paprika, rubbing the spices all over the meat. Allow to marinate for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Grill the steak for about 6-8 minutes on each side for medium/medium-rare (of course, depending on how thick your steak is as well).
  5. Allow steak to rest at room temperature for at least 10 minutes and then carve slices on the diagonal. Spoon chimichuri sauce over steak and serve.

I eat healthy by eating vegetarian (3+ years now) and by also keeping a food diary. Healthy food doesn’t have to be tasteless and the more we know about calories, nutrients, and what our bodies need to be most efficient, the better off we are!

There was a physician here in the San Francisco market that had his own radio show locally for about 30 years that recently retired a couple of years ago and I really like his take on nutrition:

Eat a balanced diet, including all the stuff that’s considered unhealthy; just watch your portion sizes. Even water can be toxic to humans if consumed in large enough quantities…
