Grilled Avocados

This is not so much a recipe, but more of a revelation! Grill + avocado. Two of my obsessions this summer. We have not turned off the grill this week and because of that our propane actually ran out in the midst of grilling these gorgeous green jewels. I finished them off just in time with our indoor grill pan and the flavor was still extraordinary.

And am I the only one that can not get enough of avocados this year? Butttery and smooth…I know I am only supposed to limit myself to 1/4 a day, but because I know they are so good for me I may double the amount here and there…that’s ok, right?

The method is so simple. Slice an avocado in half, remove pit and grill for 5 minutes until charring. I made a quick guacamole with the charred green fruit and could instantly tell a difference. The guacamole was smokey and deep, still buttery and smooth.

A quick, rustic guacamole. And I mean, very rustic…it doesn’t even lend a recipe. Grilled avo, splash of salsa, lime and hot sauce. Simple and to the point.  Sometimes it just needs to be that way.

Next time you have an avocado, throw him on the grill. You will love it.

Now….what’s next on my grilling list?

Wow, this sounds amazing. Thanks for the idea!

Have you tried smoking grains? At the School of Natural Cookery in Boulder, we put rolled oats in a smoker and smoked them on the grill with fragrant wood chips. Then we cooked them into a savory dish with onions, sage, carrots etc. Amazing! Maybe a smoker is on your grill experimentation list?

Congrats on making the Foodbuzz Top 9, Samantha!
I’m always amazed when some avos have cooked a little, and they taste so good. Like, if I put chunks in the pan with a quesadilla and… they taste different than raw, but SO GOOD! I bet grilled on the barbeque’s even better :)
    Thanks for posting!

Great idea! I made a very nice guac that included goji berries, and I might re-make on the grill this time. Thanks for the idea! cookingdangerously.com

Grilling avocados is such a great idea, I don’t know why I haven’t done it yet! Except I’ll have to make do with a grill pan rather than a proper grill…but I’m sure it’ll still be delicious :) Nice photos and I love that cloth underneath the plate!
